Google Has Announced That It Will Penalize Sites With Pages That Are Top-Heavy With Ads

Have you seen those sites who’s content is found only after scrolling past a gauntlet of ads. Well, Google’s “page layout algorithm” will start penalizing those sites. Is your site one of these? Then you should carefully consider what I”m about to share with you.

From Google’s own “Inside Search blog” I found the following:

We’ve heard complaints from users that if they click on a result and it’s difficult to find the actual content, they aren’t happy with the experience. Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads, users want to see content right away.So sites that don’t have much content “above-the-fold” can be affected by this change. If you click on a website and the part of the website you see first either doesn’t have a lot of visible content above-the-fold or dedicates a large fraction of the site’s initial screen real estate to ads, that’s not a very good user experience.

Such sites may not rank as highly going forward.

And in Google’s Webmaster Central blog Google also posted the same information. Check it out

So How Much Is Too Much?

Although Google is not clarifying their position on how many ads above the fold are considered too many they are encouraging people to make use of its Google Browser Size tool or similar tools to understand how much of a page’s content (as opposed to ads) is visible at first glance to visitors under various screen resolutions.

Although Google is usually as tight lip as the Federal Reserve Chairman they did provide the following statement:

We understand that placing ads above-the-fold is quite common for many websites; these ads often perform well and help publishers monetize online content.
This algorithmic change does not affect sites who place ads above-the-fold to a normal degree, but affects sites that go much further to load the top of the page with ads to an excessive degree or that make it hard to find the actual original content on the page.

This new algorithmic improvement tends to impact sites where there is only a small amount of visible content above-the-fold or relevant content is persistently pushed down by large blocks of ads.

1. Get enough sleep. Contrary to pop culture, it’s not a status symbol, or sign of virility. Research with arctic scientists proved they were more productive, more focused and got their work done faster, if they slept at least 9 hours per night, as compared to getting only 6 hours per night.
2. Don’t multitask. Cognitive neuro-scientists have proven that humans cannot multitask. It’s merely fast switching from one thing to another. Every time you switch tasks you lose concentration and momentum. The older you are, the harder it gets.
3. Turn off distractions and focus. Disconnect yourself from the grid. The world will continue to spin without you. Shut off the pings, tweets, instant messages, etc and focus your attention. Get off the grid for days at a time if you need to, and get the project done.
4. Make a stop doing list. There are so many addictive behaviors in life. So put down that video game. Stop yourself from doing them by making a list. If what you’re doing is not moving you closer to your goals, stop it.
5. No whining or complaining. Moaning about your situation doesn’t do anything to help it. Nothing changes until you decide to change it. It’s not about having enough resources. It’s about your resourcefulness.
6. Make less more often. Attention spans are down. People are gleaning facts, not looking for deep understanding. Make your content shorter. Make videos under 3 minutes and posts under 250 words, but do them more often, with one key point in each.
7. Hire the talent. If you’re an expert in something, get others to write for you in the form of guest articles or posts. Since you know the field well, you’ll know good content when you see it. Getting more content, produces more authoritative pages and grows your website quickly.
8. Upgrade your equipment. It’s frustrating waiting for machines, uploads, or having to sneakernet data around between computers. I got a Thunderbolt based Mac laptop. Now one computer can hook to the big monitor for production work, or slide into the backpack. All the data is in one place.
9. Repurpose your content. You may have heard it called transmedia, multimedia, or intermedia, but its all the same thing. Shoot a three minute talking head video, extract the audio for a podcast, and get it transcribed for text and slides. Now you can take one message and share it, in different forms, in hundreds of places.
10. Protect your assets. Although not technically a production booster, it will prevent down time, headaches and legal hassles. Get the proper legal pages up on your site, like terms and conditions of use, privacy policy and the rest. It shows that you’re running a serious business and they protect it. Plus as a bonus, its proven to boost consumer confidence.
11. Focus on your core competencies. Learning a new skill is great, so long as you can apply it immediately to what you’re already doing. It’s better to cultivate deep understanding of one thing, than it is to flit from idea to idea, looking for the next quick hit, that never comes. Put down roots and do something you love.
12. Go analog. When it comes time for planning, go low tech with pencil and paper. Research has shown that thoughts are more complete if you write them out by hand. You’re also more connected to them, more likely to complete them and remember them.
13. Make a to do list. This idea has been around for 100 years and its still great advice. Make a list of the 5 top things you want to achieve tomorrow, and number them in their order of their importance. Then do at least one of them and make progress towards your worthy goals, or ideals.
14. Plan in quarters. Divide a piece of paper into four columns. List in each quarter what you want to achieve. Once you have your list, transfer it to a whiteboard within plain view. Then you can keep yourself on track as you aim for your quarterly goals.
15. Quit. Have the courage to quit, or delegate, everything you’re merely average at doing. Good enough isn’t good enough anymore. Everyone’s a channel, a content provider and a brand. What we lack is trust. So make a commitment to be the best in the world at what you love to do, or sell the farm and move on.

I contact all my “Guru” buddies and say, “bud, I got this great sales funnel which will make you load of money on the front, and back end of the sales cycle. All you have to do is send your massive list the following email and I will pay you the following commission per sale. And just to make things fair to you I will send to my list of subscribers a promotional email about one of your products.”

And so goes the conversation with a number of so call buddies, and of course, sales are made since a list of subscribers is made up of people whom have bought from you before a few times and have proven themselves to be eager to buy the next great thing.

And so the impressive Clickbank sales chart grows….

I’m Blowing The Whistle!

I am sick and tired of these people!

As of late I’ve requested several refunds of products I’ve purchased and after giving them a fair chance realized that they where not ready for prime-time marketing. I’m talking about those super dooper fantabolistic secret software that has been making the developer thousands of dollars every day!

CRAP! CRAP And more CRAP!

Here’s whats’ happening…..

They develop a software application that has the capability of performing like they claim, but by the time you get it there are a few things which have changed. First of all the sites the application so successfully connected to in order to drive traffic to your site has by now recognized the programs footprint and take corrective measures to stop the program from working correctly, which forces the developer to have a cadre of techs continually tweaking the app to compensate. However; until they are able to successfully overcome the changes made by the site administrator, you have lost one whole month or two of traffic you could have received from that site if only you had just logged into the site manually and created your profile.

Then there are those apps which just don’t work as promoted. So what is the sinister reason behind this? Well I call it the Microsoft R&D ploy. They sell you a bunch of hyped up crap, knowing that there will be enough good intentioned clients willing to provide enough feedback which they will use to make the app work. In other words, you are not buying an app which is tested and ready to work for you as promised. Oh no sir! You are paying them for the privilege of testing an app which may or may never worked as promised.

And to add insult to injury, you then start getting a barrage of emails promoting another amazing fabu product that will make you a million dollars in one week!

In the meantime you are still waiting to get the product you just purchase to work. So there you sit knowing that your support email will be addressed and your problems resolved.

So how can you tell if you are about to get scammed?

First of all never ever jump and buy anything until you have at the very least done some of the things I’m about to recommend.

Understand that most sites which are promoting the product you are investigating will add the following qualifiers to the title:

“Product name” + “Review”

“Product name” + “Scam”

“Product name” + “Bonus”

Those qualifiers may show up in their singular or plural expressions. For the most part, sites using those titles are own by individuals aiming to sell the product you are investigating. But it will not hurt to read them as some will give you and honest review of the product, and after reading a few of them you may even detect that it is nothing else but a rehash of a previous product.

The next thing I would do, but not necessarily in this order is to look for the “affiliate” offer.  Most of the time this offer is found towards the bottom of the sales page. If you do find one, I recommend you follow the link, because you may discover that the product being offer is a “loss leader”, and that in order for you to really have a chance at making some kind of money you will have to spend more money on what is referred to as back-end products. This my friends is where these Gurus make their money. Here is where that $27 or $37 dollar miracle product all the sudden needs you to spend $97 or $197  or more in order to get the “inside super duper secret tricks and tips” that will skyrocket your earnings over-night.

Another investigation; which will really wake you up, is reading through their support forum. recently, I bought a program which promised the ability to automate the creation and deployment process of wordpress blogs. Well, not only did the program not work, but it was obvious via the support forum post that the program was not working at all for anyone. And to boot, the support staff (if one existed at all) was not even answering call for help. So guess what happened? the forum was killed! Yup, it is no longer around. But this is also a great way to discover what if any issues current users are experiencing. However; more and more of these so called Gurus, and now giving access to the support forum to those whom have purchase the product, in effect making prying public scrutiny more difficult. But if you bough the product via Clickbank, and the developer of the product has a written refund policy, and you have a valid claim, you will get your money back. If you choose to go this way I would strongly advice you give the product a fail run. And make sure you have follow all support instructions, and keep copies of all email correspondence. This is your due diligence, comply with it.

One more great place to look for info regarding the program and or product you are thinking about getting is the Warrior Forum. This is a forum for internet marketers, and affiliate marketers. These people talk about the product and most of them are very up front about their experience with the product and or service you are investigating.  Here is how I search for information in this forum”

product name site:warriorforum.com

Put this line on the Google search entry box, and you will see all the forum threads related to the product you are investigating.

Although there are many more ways to investigate a product, these have served me well.

While all the other marketers out there selling backlinks or services are trying to make you believe they have some sort of secret sauce for finding those coveted, yet elusive high quality links from government sites and education sites, I’m going to give you everything you need to find them yourselves – hundreds of them (possibly thousands) in a matter of minutes.

Here’s how:

1. Go to Google.com and type in the following string:

site:edu inurl:blog “leave a comment” -”comments closed” -”you must be logged in to comment”

It looks like gibberish to the uninformed, but now you can consider yourself “informed.”

site:edu – means Google will only display search results from sites with a .edu extension.

inurl:blog – means your results will only show blogs that are located on those .edu domains.

“leave a comment” – means your search results will only show blogs on .edu domains that have comment forms.

-”comments closed” – Note the “-“? that means your search results will NOT display blogs where commenting is closed.

-”you must be logged in to comment” – There’s that – again. It means your search results will exclude blogs where you need to be logged in to leave comments.

To expand on this a little, if you only want to find blogs on .gov domains that have open comments, just replace site:edu with site:gov in your search string.

Also, don’t be afraid to experiment with your search strings. You can add or remove any of the elements in the above search string and you’ll get different results. Add your main keywords for the page you need backlinks for if you want to get specific.

Use this for your advantage

Here are some new cool strings for you that you can use to find TONS of websites where you can leave comments:

1. Find .EDU and .GOV blogs where you can get links. Use the following search strings but where it says “keyword phrase” be sure to change that to one of the keywords relating to your blog or website, leaving it inside quotation marks.

Here is the syntax to use:

“keyword phrase”+inurl:blog site:.edu

“keyword phrase”+inurl:blog site:.gov

By Way Of Example:

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+wp-admin

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+blog site:.gov+comment.php

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+”submit site”

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+”submit your site”

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+”add url”

“keyword phrase” site:.edu inurl:blog “keyword” “comment”

“keyword phrase” site:gov – “you must be logged in” -”comment closed”

“keyword phrase” site:edu – “you must be logged in” -”comment closed”

2. Search and sift through the results to find sites that allow comments on their blogs. This shows that other people are successfully using this strategy and to go ahead and add your comment and link to your website.

3. Build your list of websites that you could comment on (or outsource this) to create a database of .EDU and .GOV backlinks you can use.

4. Comment on these blogs. Be informed, be kind, and stay on topic. Doing a couple minutes of research and posting relevant helpful information will increase your success tenfold. At the very least, put some thought into a contextual post that fits in with what is being discussed. If you don’t do this, you may completely waste your time.

5. When you make a comment, put in your information, then put in your HTML link.

Don’t overdo this. Spread out your comments over time and bookmark a lot of the sites that you comment on regularly. Instead of concentrating solely on one keyword and linking to your homepage over and over again, spread it among different categories, posts, and pages in your blog. Look for some of the longer tail keywords you can link to directly to some of the inner pages of your website to get more bandwidth.

Keyword research is important, no doubt, but there is no mystery to it.

There are two basic ways to identify a keyword you can use to drive traffic to you site and thereby increase your page rank. First of all there is the obvious ones; the product names people type when looking to buy at the lowest possible price. You can use Amazon or eBay to search through their best sellers and use the user reviews to help you gauge popularity. Once you find a few of these product based keywords, then the next step is to determine if you have a chance at making money; in other words, you now need to measure the competition strength (more on these latter).

Now, if you want to exploit a particular niche I recommend you start with the “root” keyword of that niche, and drill down into the long-tail keyword phrases until you find a “back-door” into the niche.  In marketing, one of the most important steps you can take is to segment your audience. If you can divide them by their interests, then you can craft a message that’s perfectly targeted at the group you want to pursue. It makes it much, much easier to grab their attention.

By way of example, if you take the root keyword “laptop” you will come up with many 2 and 3 word keyword phrases which are related to the root word. I always try to go with the 3 word phrases as they are closer to what a user may have typed into the search engine.

Its important to know that not everyone who uses an Internet Search Engine is looking to buy; they could just be researching. And because of this search engine results can be divided into two categories; research keyword phrases, and “buy” keyword phrases. Now depending on your business model you can go with one or the other.

If your business model is making money from ads placed on your site, then these ads will be contextually related to your content. Thus you want to attract the person who is doing research. They will most likely click on those ads as they will appear to include additional relate info.

On the other hand, if you are targeting the buyer, that individual has already decided to “buy”, hence an approach which helps the person make a buying decision would be more successful. Competition Strength

No doubt you want to have a fighting chance at succeeding, so you need to select a niche with room for you. However; there are several assumptions made, particularly to your ability to drive traffic to your site, and your knowledge of both on-site and off-site SEO. Therefore if you are just starting out and SEO is still an esoteric term, then you may want to consider a competition level of less than 10 thousand.

Measuring Competition Strength

There are several paid for tools which can provide this information, however; you can obtain this data from Google by using certain search parameters. Most people are familiar with using the Google search engine, but depending upon how you present your search query your results can tell a totally different story.

To measure you competition strength you need to familiarize your self with certain Google search filters. A competitor will have performed certain on-site Search Engine Optimization tasks such as including the keyword phrase in the site title, as well as in the article titles, and may even have that phrase as their domain name or as part of it. Therefore when you are measuring competition strength for a particular keyword phrase you want to use the Google search filter intitle:”keyword phrase”. Just replace toe words “keyword phrase” with yours and the results will indicate how many sites are optimizing (competing)  for that keyword phrase.

There are other factors to consider in the evaluation of your competitors, but this is the start. from here you look at all the factors which makes them your competitors, and how you can beat them and even dominate the niche.

Once you have identified your keyword phrases, and ascertained the strength of your competition, then you will create an off-site keyword phrase campaign to drive traffic to your site. As you increase the keyword phrase related traffic your site gets the higher your page rank gets, and the closer to the top of Google’s Search engine Results page you get.

One of the best ways I know to get quality backlinks is via blog commenting. The idea with this technique is that you want to search for blogs which have articles that have been ranked high by Goggle, and that the topic of the article is complementary to your article. By complementary I mean that the article is thematically related. For instance, if you are selling recipes then a site that sells cookware is thematically related. If you are selling recipes about apple pies, then a site that talks about Apple; the company is not thematically related. Get the idea.

The next important point to consider while using this technique is the fact that you are going to make a comment on someones site. If you own a site, you know how many useless comments you get on a weekly basis. And you trash them all the time. However; every so often, you get someone who leaves a comment which is not only complementary, but has added value to your article via their comment. In other words, they have expanded on your idea to include information you may have not considered when you wrote the article. Those are the comments you tend to approve, and even reply to the commenter. Well, guess what, those are the kind of comments you want to make.
