While all the other marketers out there selling backlinks or services are trying to make you believe they have some sort of secret sauce for finding those coveted, yet elusive high quality links from government sites and education sites, I’m going to give you everything you need to find them yourselves – hundreds of them (possibly thousands) in a matter of minutes.

Here’s how:

1. Go to Google.com and type in the following string:

site:edu inurl:blog “leave a comment” -”comments closed” -”you must be logged in to comment”

It looks like gibberish to the uninformed, but now you can consider yourself “informed.”

site:edu – means Google will only display search results from sites with a .edu extension.

inurl:blog – means your results will only show blogs that are located on those .edu domains.

“leave a comment” – means your search results will only show blogs on .edu domains that have comment forms.

-”comments closed” – Note the “-“? that means your search results will NOT display blogs where commenting is closed.

-”you must be logged in to comment” – There’s that – again. It means your search results will exclude blogs where you need to be logged in to leave comments.

To expand on this a little, if you only want to find blogs on .gov domains that have open comments, just replace site:edu with site:gov in your search string.

Also, don’t be afraid to experiment with your search strings. You can add or remove any of the elements in the above search string and you’ll get different results. Add your main keywords for the page you need backlinks for if you want to get specific.

Use this for your advantage

Here are some new cool strings for you that you can use to find TONS of websites where you can leave comments:

1. Find .EDU and .GOV blogs where you can get links. Use the following search strings but where it says “keyword phrase” be sure to change that to one of the keywords relating to your blog or website, leaving it inside quotation marks.

Here is the syntax to use:

“keyword phrase”+inurl:blog site:.edu

“keyword phrase“+inurl:blog site:.gov

By Way Of Example:

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+wp-admin

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+blog site:.gov+comment.php

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+”submit site”

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+”submit your site”

“keyword phrase” site:.gov+”add url”

“keyword phrase” site:.edu inurl:blog “keyword” “comment”

“keyword phrase” site:gov – “you must be logged in” -”comment closed”

“keyword phrase” site:edu – “you must be logged in” -”comment closed”

2. Search and sift through the results to find sites that allow comments on their blogs. This shows that other people are successfully using this strategy and to go ahead and add your comment and link to your website.

3. Build your list of websites that you could comment on (or outsource this) to create a database of .EDU and .GOV backlinks you can use.

4. Comment on these blogs. Be informed, be kind, and stay on topic. Doing a couple minutes of research and posting relevant helpful information will increase your success tenfold. At the very least, put some thought into a contextual post that fits in with what is being discussed. If you don’t do this, you may completely waste your time.

5. When you make a comment, put in your information, then put in your HTML link.

Don’t overdo this. Spread out your comments over time and bookmark a lot of the sites that you comment on regularly. Instead of concentrating solely on one keyword and linking to your homepage over and over again, spread it among different categories, posts, and pages in your blog. Look for some of the longer tail keywords you can link to directly to some of the inner pages of your website to get more bandwidth.

Just as in high school, on the World Wide Web, your website is known by the company it keeps. Link to the wrong site or “hang with the wrong crowd” and you could be ostracized by the search engine community before you even begin. Achieve quality inbound links from a wide range of popular kids on the internet, however, and watch your site’s online profile soar. Sounds simple, and it is, if you know what to do to climb the online social ladder that is Link Popularity.

But before we get to that, what exactly is Link Popularity? Simply defined, Link Popularity is a measure of the quantity and quality of other web sites that link to your site on the internet at any given time. It is considered an off-the-page criteria that is greatly utilized by search engines to determine the overall importance and quality of your site to the online community. Because of its impartial nature, a site with a very high number of incoming links is usually viewed as highly relevant to the online community at large and thus highly visible within relevant search engine results. Whereas a content-poor site will attract fewer incoming links and thus hold little value to the same visitors.

Still there, good! The results probably weren’t what you had hoped for though, where they? Not to worry; probably the biggest threat to you obtaining a high link popularity score for your site is relying on old information. To that end, below is a quick 10-step CURRENT process that can be implemented immediately to increase your site’s overall link popularity:

Step 1 - SUBMIT YOUR SITE TO OPEN DIRECTORY (DMOZ) AND YAHOO – Although neither of these sites are the 800 lb. gorillas they used to be, any link from these sites is going to increase your online profile immediately and very visibly. Find your appropriate category in both sites and submit for free with DMOZ and invest the 9 for a yearly indexing with Yahoo. Although DMOZ is still incredibly slow in adding new sites, keep at it, find the appropriate editor and send him cookies or flowers if necessary (couldn’t hurt?) then be patient.

Step 2 – ADD YOUR KEYWORDS TO THE LINKING ANCHOR TEXT – When at all possible, try to have an on-point relevant keyword phrase used as the linking text within any inbound link your seek for your site. But if you are selling toothbrushes to Eskimos, then “Eskimo toothbrushes for sale” as the linking keyword phrase from one site to yours is always the way to go.

Step 3 – WRITE ARTICLES AND SUBMIT PRESS RELEASES – Hey, look what I am doing right now! I could be watching ESPN, but I am writing this article instead. Write articles and submit press releases when you have a personnel change, introduce or upgrade a service or product or when you have a topic of interest you wish to share with the online world web community. Don’t have a blog? Get one! This is a simple way to get your articles and press releases out for indexing and review. Make sure to include links to your site where appropriate and watch your link popularity grow and grow.

Step 4 – FIND OUT WHO LINKS TO YOUR COMPETITORS – Go to Google.com and enter this into this search query: link:www.yourcompetitor.com. Do the same for Yahoo by entering linkdomain:www.your-competitor.com -site:www.your-competitor.com into the search field. Seek out the sites linking to your competitors and convince them to link to you instead. You win TWICE with this approach. You gain a quality link and an increase in your overall popularity while your competitor LOSES a link and achieves a lower popularity score in return.

Step 5 – CREATE AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM – Nothing generates quality, inbound links to your site faster than an established, commission-paying affiliate program. Whether your site is product or service-based, an affiliate program can be just the thing that takes your site and its link popularity to new heights. Visit www.CommissionJunction.com or www.LinkShare.com to set-up a new affiliate program of your design today and watch your online profile grow by leaps and bounds.

Step 6 – DEEP LINK YOUR SITE – This step is vastly overlooked by even the most savvy of online marketers initiating a new link popularity campaign. Make sure that links you seek out or solicit don’t just link to your home page, but ALL pages of your website. This process has numerous benefits including expanding your overall online link profile as well as generating unique Google PageRank values for each and every one of your site’s pages instead of just your home page.

Step 7 – SIGN UP ON GUESTBOOKS AND FORUMS – If you don’t participate in forums on your site topic or remember to sign-in when visiting a new site for the first time, now is the time to make such actions a habit. Step 9 – AVOID LINK FARMS AND LINK EXCHANGES – Reputation on the web is more important than ever. Again, just like friendships in high school, it’s better to have fewer higher-quality links to your site than hundreds of off-point, non-relevant links that do nothing to enhance the overall experience of the online community. Stay away, far away, from companies promising you hundreds of links to your site overnight. At best you don’t need the links, and at worst, you could be banned by the major search engines altogether.

Step 10 – DOWNLOAD THE GOOGLE TOOLBAR – This very simple technique allows you to view all potential link partners by the very important Google PageRank score (1-10) that is viewable in this browser. Use the toolbar to keep tabs on your own site’s PageRank score, than seek out complimentary, highly relevant linking partners that have a Google PageRank score of 6 or higher whenever possible. Convince a handful of high Google PageRank sites to link back to you and watch your site take off.

Remember, just like in high school, you and your site will be known by the company kept. Follow the simple, ten step plan outlined above, and you will be well on your way to achieving real, measured, lasting success online. One of the best ways I know to get quality backlinks is via blog commenting. The idea with this technique is that you want to search for blogs which have articles that have been ranked high by Goggle, and that the topic of the article is complementary to your article. By complementary I mean that the article is thematically related. For instance, if you are selling recipes then a site that sells cookware is thematically related. I’ve been writing much about site popularity, and linkbuilding because I know that without backlinks you cannot rank well in the search engines results page. Consider that a backlink is like a vote of confidence. And the weight given to that vote is predicated on the confidence the search engine has about the site giving you the backlink. Therefore; putting in your time and effort and even money trying to get a backlink from a site which has no rank, and is not related to your site will be a waste of time and money.

There is so much to say about this subject, and so many angles related to it. Recently I came a cross an article written by Nick Summers where he focuses on one aspect of link building, and that is link exchange. This is still a very viable strategy, and one you should know about and gradually incorporate into your overall backlink-building strategy.

How to Gain Extra Traffic with Increased Link Popularity

For most web surfers Search engines are the gateway to the Internet; they are the first tool your potential customers are likely to use to find the products and services they need. So part of your internet marketing strategy must be improving your search rankings. Increasingly search engines are looking at Link Popularity to measure the worth of your site. This is why link popularity is so crucial to climbing up the search engine results.

Search engines are discretionary, giving status and ranking to sites that have links to their pages from related, quality sites. It’s a simple formula, but a very important one. More links to your site from ‘authority sites’ = greater link popularity = higher position in search engine results. Google created the system, and now virtually all the most popular search engines employ it to rank your web pages in their indexes.

The more commonly used your keyword is, the harder it will be to achieve link popularity, but without achieving this step, it is almost certain your site will never rank highly on any search engine. But don’t be discouraged; there are tried and true ways of achieving link popularity using the most competitive keywords.

There are a few things you should be aware of. The first is that just linking up with a large number of other websites will not achieve link popularity. In fact, it may have quite the opposite effect. This is particularly true when pertaining to websites that are nothing more than ‘link farms’ – pages containing line after line of indiscriminate links. Search engines may aggressively discriminate against your website if you are associated with a link farm, so steer clear of them!

The next thing to bear in mind is the quality of the site you are linking to. Never link to a page you have reservations about your visitors seeing. The last thing you want your website to appear as is indiscriminate and cheap. Linking to sites of poor quality will only lessen your link popularity, if not completely destroy it.

So let’s get to what you need to do to achieve supreme link popularity and improve your rankings to stellar status on all the popular search engines.

The first step, and the fastest way to get your foot in the door, is to get a listing in a popular directory, such as Open Directory Project and Yahoo. If your site is business-related, you will want to be listed on Yahoo, and despite the fact that it will cost you a few dollars a year, it will be money well spent. If your site is non-commercial, the listing will be free, but it will take time and follow-up to actually get it listed. Open Directory gives you a free listing whether you are business-related or non-commercial, but be prepared to make a lot of follow-up inquiries before you see your site listed.

You are aiming to get listed in the highest level of appropriate category, and this just takes some common sense. For example, if your company ships Alpaca wool from an Alpaca farm located in the middle of Nowhere, Tiny State, do NOT submit your listing to ‘Retailers from Nowhere, Tiny State.’ BIG MISTAKE! All you have to do is look a little deeper and submit your listing to the ‘Fine Alpaca Wool’ category. You will not only associate yourself with culture and quality, but you will be listed in a national category.

The next step after you have attained directory listings is to locate other quality sites that will increase your link popularity. Try to find sites that are in some way related to yours, so not only will your link popularity increase, but your customer base may also be expanded. You want to avoid your competitors and look for sites that are useful to your site’s visitors. Let’s look at the Alpaca Wool site example. Linking up to a site that sells knitting supplies would be helpful to your visitors, and the chances of the knitting supply site wanting to link up to your site are also greater. By linking to a related site that will be relevant to your website’s traffic, you are increasing both of your site’s business prospects and both of your sites’ link popularity.

Not all sites want to link to other sites, so you will have to do some research when you are looking for possible linking partners. Google is an excellent starting place for your search. Make sure you enter keywords that you think quality customers will also enter to find your own site. Remember, your criteria are quality, highly ranked, non-competing websites that have a links or resources page. Go to these sites and objectively assess them. Look at the quality of the product, the graphics, and the ease of use. Then check out the other sites they are linked to, and determine if your own site would fit in with the crowd.

When you decide you have found a good prospect, you must set out to woo them. The first thing to do is to add a link on your own links page to their site. This is an essential first step; it shows good faith, and ups your chances significantly of their reciprocity. After you have added their link, you must contact the webmaster of their site. Since this is almost always done by email, you want to make sure it is immediately clear that your message is not junk mail. This requires that you tell them right off the bat that you have added a link to their page on your site. A hook like this almost always insures the reader will read on.

Next, be sure to be flattering and let them know how much you appreciate their website. Make sure you emphasize that you have actually visited their site, and that their site is not just a random pick. Give them the address of your links page, and ask them to check out the link for themselves. It’s a good idea to mention that they will not only benefit from the increased traffic your website will direct their way, but you will also increase their link popularity. Briefly, explain why link popularity is so essential, but do this in a sentence or two so you don’t sound like a professor! Finally, tell them you would greatly appreciate if they would reciprocally add a link on their own links page to your website.

Go through this process with as many appropriate sites as you can find, bearing in mind the criteria of quality and non-competitiveness. After you have emailed all relevant sites, be sure to check these website frequently to see if they have added a link to your page. Give it about a month, and if no link appears, try another charming email. Then give it another month, and if your site is still absent from their links page, it’s time to remove their link from your own links page. The only time you want to pursue a link further than this is if you believe a site is crucial to your link popularity and your business needs. Just remember to keep all your communications complimentary and cordial.

Then set up a schedule to check your ranking in search engines frequently to see if your link popularity has improved. This is not achievable in the blink of an eye. It will take some time and a good deal of work. There is no way around the labor-intensive quality of improving your link popularity, which is why search engines regard it with such importance.

By the way, make sure you have a beautiful, streamlined site or you will never persuade anyone to link up to you. Be prepared to keep plugging away at this process, as long as it takes, until you achieve link popularity stardom!

Link popularity is the single most influential factor for determining how well a web site will perform in search engine rankings. A web site’s link popularity is computed from the number and more importantly, the quality of links pointing to a web site.

Link Popularity history:

To gain a better understanding of link popularity it is useful to know why it became so crucial for search engine rankings. In the past a web page’s ranking was determined, amongst other factors, by the number of keyword occurrences within ‘on-page’ elements i.e. in page text, META tags, title tag. When web developers learned that they could trick a search engine to return their web pages by cramming keywords into their pages the search engines had to get a bit smarter. They were using ‘on-page’ elements to determine relevance so it was only natural that they would look to elements out of direct control of the web page creator i.e. ‘off-page’ elements. Search engines made the assumption that the greater the number of links from other sites pointing to a web site, the more popular the web site is and therefore a more quality resource. This worked nicely in theory but in practice it was also to be abused.

Web site owners figured out many ways to get links pointing to their web sites one example of which was through the use of link farms, pages the contained nothing more than a collection of links, Quantity of links was being abused so the search engines made use of the old saying “quality not quantity” and began to assign a quality factor to each of the links pointing to a web site. Now web sites that had a higher number of high quality links were looked upon favorably by the search engines. Building link popularity became a science in itself and today is still the most time-consuming and frustrating activity for a search engine optimizer.

Main classes of links:

Note: In the following examples SiteA is our web site and SiteB is an outside site (i.e. a web site under a different domain name than SiteA).

Inbound links:

Inbound links to a web site are links that originate from an outside web site . An example would be a link on SiteB pointing into a page on SiteA.

There are two further classifications of links:

Reciprocal links:

An example of a reciprocal link is when SiteA links to SiteB AND SiteB links to SiteA, the link is reciprocated by both parties.

AND

SiteA

One-way links:

An example of a one-way link is when either SiteA links to SiteB OR SiteB links to SiteA, it is one-way only.

To achieve a high link popularity the type of links to build are inbound one-way links. This simulates how natural links are created i.e. links that people create to point to your site because they found it worth linking to.

For outbound links it is natural to assume that they might decrease link popularity of a web site but this is not true. You do not give away your link popularity when you link to another site. They do not add to your link popularity though.

Reciprocal links can add to your link popularity if the web site that you exchange links with has a higher link popularity than your site. However they are not as powerful as inbound, one-way links as they are quite artificial in nature i.e. most probably created by communication between the owners of both sites.

How to build link popularity:

So it is quite obvious that to help build up a nice link popularity many inbound, one-way links need to be created. This can be achieved in a number of different (and most importantly, legal) ways:

Directories:

Directories are categorized listings of links from around the web. Many, many directories exist and vary in their methods of getting your link posted on them. They provide a great source of quality inbound, one-way links. Getting listed in quality directories such as DMOZ or Yahoo can be more beneficial for your link popularity than a lot of links from smaller, newer directories. Directories are discussed in my Directories article

Great site content:

The most powerful way to get inbound, one-way links is to have great site content that other web sites will want to link to. This allows you to get links from sites other than directories, which can definitely be better. The best thing about this is that it requires no communication on your part, it just happens naturally. If your site has poor content then others sites may not link, including the directories. Most of the top ranking web sites today got to the top because of great content. Writing interesting and informative articles for your web site is a good way of getting these kind of links.

Emailing web site owners:

If you come across a listing of links on a web site other than a directory e.g. a links page on a somebody’s personal web site, it can do no harm to write the web site owner a polite email requesting a link to your site from their page. They may request a reciprocal link in return but sometimes they do not and you can get a quality inbound, one-way link for your efforts. I have got many links in the past using this method. In my email I always ask them to visit my site first before making a decision to link and I personalize each email with a comment or two about their site.

Summary:

The best and most effective way of increasing your search engine rankings is working to improve your web site’s link popularity. This can be achieved by getting as many inbound, one-way links as you can from quality sites such as directories. Other ways to get these links are having great content on your site and requesting a link to your site from other web sites.

Increasing link popularity is a time-consuming and sometimes frustrating process but is definitely worth the time and effort when you see a dramatic increase in traffic.

It is clear that your site will not be listed on Google quickly. Search Engines usually takes news sites very fast if you are linked by other popular related web sites. New site will also not get reciprocal link from other sites because of non popularity or 0 PR (Google Page Rank).

Now what strategy should new sites adopt to get started on the Web? Here are the few one, which will work.

1. Get Listed on Free Top Web directory Try to get listed on open directory project DMOZ ( www.dmoz.org.) and also submit your site to Yahoo! by visiting http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/. Be sure to follow their guidelines for listing. The important free directories in addition to dmoz are:

2. Get Links for Your Associates Try to get link from your associated or friends web sites. If you are in business you can get link from your dealers or business associates. 3. Free Site Submission Tools There are lot free site submit tool are available on the Internet. Use them to get listing as for the new site owner it is difficult to find the important search engines. Be careful and do not submit many time to same search engines as they may consider repetive submission it Spam. Further try to keep away from FFA pages as they are treated as ‘link farms” by search engines and listing is penalized.

4. Join Discussion Forum The Discussion form is another media to get inbound links. Join the Message Board which is related to the theme of your site and if you are expert in your field you can reply the many threads. Be sure to include your URL in your signature and also anchor text to be linked with URL should be your site Keyword. If the message board allows it, you can even include a short promotional blurb about your site at the end of your posts. Even if you do not post try to add your url in profile and it is also an inbound link and is important if from your theme based Forum. Try to add your details i.e city, country name, interest and occupation in profile as it will make your theme based pages where all contents are related to you.

5. Email based discussion Email based discussion lists, which are archived on the web in static HTML pages can also be used to boost the link popularity of your site in a similar manner. In this case, the signature file that you use with your email program should contain the URL for your web site.

6. Reciprocal links request low page rank sites The New site faces difficulty in exchanging link with high Page Rank Sites. It is better to start exchanging link with sites which are related to your topic or theme of your site even they may have low Page Rank. You will see that there page rank will increase with the time and you will gain.

7. Link Popularity through Awards Try to join the award sites. There are many sites which open contest or award of good site design or good content site you can apply for it. It is always said better beginning is half done. So if new site adopt the above method to increase link popularity they are sure to build good page rank in the beginning and latter on all higher page rank web sites will be ready to exchange link with you and will result into building of solid link popularity for your site. You should not expect results (Increase in search engine ranking) so fast. Wait for at least 3 month till search engines index you all full site pages.

The bottom line is that Link Popularity is not gained over night. It takes planned effort and plenty of patience. So build your links every day. Do not say from your goals, take your time and build you links carefully, and methodically. Most importantly, build quality links.

Broadcast emails are a bad idea, sure it is easier, but they are considered spam and will only make the company mad at you. Spam link requests waste everyone’s time and don’t work.

7) Give them your exact HTML link code. When you send them what you want in the link and suggest which page you want it on, it makes their job easier. This also makes sure the right words are used in the link and reduces the burden in setting up the link. Everybody is pressed for time, and, if you make it “drop-in simple”, you will be making it irresistible. The easier it is for them, the more successful you will be in convincing them to use your link.

Get listed on as many directories as you can. This is important if your site is new or you do not have any inbound links. Another reason this is important is that, without inbound links, your site is at a disadvantage with most search engine rankings.

Everyone who does business online knows that they want to be on page one of the Search Engine Results Page (SERPs), yet very few know just how to do this.

So why is Linkbuilding so important you your Internet Based Home Business? The answer is simple Traffic!

Consider this… if you where going to open a brick, and mortal retail store, would you locate it in some back alley or on the busiest sidewalk in your town/city?

The same is true for your Internet Based Home Business.

But we have not answer what Linkbuilding is and how it can benefit you…

Linkbuilding is the process of getting “votes” to your site from highly ranked sites.

You see, when the Search Engine Spiders or “Bots” visit those sites, they will find a reference to your site; this will cause the Bots to consider your site popular because a highly ranked site said so just by hosting information about your site.

Any site with page ranked 5 and above is a great site from which to set up a Linkbuilding campaign.

It isn’t hard to do this. You will use several “web property” sites to build your Linkbuilding campaign. Following is a list of the type of sites you will need:

• Social Bookmarking
• RSS Aggregators
• Social Network Sites
• Authority Sites
• Free Blogs

What you want to do is create an account which you will use to post information about your site in each one of these “web property” sites. I recommend you use one user account per site you are promoting. The key here is that your sites will be “Thematically” built following a Silo structure. In a future article I will go over these two points.

Therefore; every time you add an article to your site(s) you will post an excerpt (summary) about the article in each of the  “web property” site types mentioned.

If you are using a Blog (which I highly recommend) you can automate at least two of the most important Linkbuilding process. For instance, with WordPress you can install certain plugins which will automatically post a summary of your articles in both Social Bookmarking and RSS Aggregator sites for you.

To get a summary of your articles published in your Social Networking Sites, you can use your sites RSS.

The Authority Sites I’m referring to are blogs with Page Ranks of 5 or better with “dofollow”  turned on. The “dofollow” filter basically tells the Bots they are allowed to follow the URLs listed in your comment. Therefore; if you include your sites URL, the Bots will follow it to your site. This creates a “Vote” to your site in the eyes of the Search Engine Bot.

Therefore; you want to find Blogs with high page ranks which have the “dofollow” filter turned on, and are “Thematically” related to your site.

It is not difficult to find these sites. There are a number of free tools which can help you accomplish this task. I like Comment Kahuna, while others prefer Comment Hut.

There is a difference between them. Comment Kahuna tends to return blogs which have categories “related” to your keyword. The key point here is that this program will search for Categories related to your keyword; these returns articles which may not be 100% related to your keyword. Comment Hut, on the other hand, will only find blogs which have articles which contain your selected keywords; therefore the results are 100% related. However; Comment Hut is not free. But they do have a “light” version which is free and you can download it here.

Free Blogs are another source from which to buildlinks. The ones I mainly use are Squidoo, and Hubpages. There are other like Live Journal, and such which you should search for. These sites allow you to publish articles in the blog they create for your user account. Within these articles your are able to add your links pointing to your sites; thereby creating back links to your articles.

So I will leave you with the following terms: Money Sites and Link Sites.

Your money sites are sites you host via your preferred hosting company. These are mini sites; containing 5 – 10 articles total. Each of these mini-sites will have at least two income streams. One of them can be Adsense, and the other a product from either Clickbank, Commission Junction, Linkshare, Share a sale or related CPA offer.

Your Link Sites are used for creating Back Links to your Money Sites

Now to answer the very last part of How can a Linkbuilding Campaign help you…

Here is the short and sweet answer; the more links you have from sites Ranked 3 or better, the closer to the First Page of the Search Engine Results Page your site gets. And this is like locating your Money Site on the busiest sidewalk in your town.
